Vertical Light and Future Connection

Phase Two extends the design vision vertically by introducing a large oculus—a cascading conical opening that begins at the top level of the parking garage, which sits above the check-in hall, and descends through all terminal levels. This opening allows natural light to penetrate deep into the terminal for the first time, creating a visual and atmospheric connection to the sky. The conical form begins broad at the upper deck and narrows as it descends, culminating in a smaller circular aperture at the base of the hall.

At the bottom of this stepped cone, a new interior landscape is proposed: a green garden filled with trees and other biophilic elements. This feature transforms the heart of the check-in hall into a calming, nature-filled space that balances the technological precision of the terminal with warmth and humanity. The cone’s geometry and planting design together define a new focal point within the hall, framing light, shadow, and growth as integral parts of the architectural experience.

Beyond its spatial and symbolic importance, this oculus could also provide an opportunity for a new vertical circulation connection—linking the parking deck directly with the ticketing hall below. While Phase Two extends beyond the initial budget, it is envisioned as a future enhancement that can be realized as passenger volumes increase and the terminal continues to expand. Together, both phases represent a cohesive architectural strategy: one that respects the original human-centered ethos of Tampa International Airport while projecting its evolution toward a more luminous and connected future.
